Edmodo

Hi AP Worlders,

I have recently learned about a new interactive website for students and teachers, called Edmodo. I would very much like for us to try this. It seems like it is a combination of what we can do on the blog and Facebook (plus I can post documents and powepoints), and since some of our classmates are not on Facebook, I think we should have a cyber venue that is for everyone. If this works, we can use this instead of Facebook, as I am not totally comfortable with that cyber venue anyway.

So here is what you have to do. Please go to edmodo.com and register. Click on "I am a student" and enter our special group registration code: li8upi

Let's see what we can create together. I am very excited about this.

Cheers,
Ms. Randall

Hello New AP World Students,

We are going to have an incredible year and I am very excited. Here is your first assignment.

1. Bring in a photo of you from your summer travels. If you don't have one, it's ok.

2. Read "The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race," by Jared Diamond.

Answer the following questions and bring in for collection on Wednesday, Sept 14. (Typed)

1. According to Diamond, what is "the worst mistake"?
2. How did this so-called mistake affect humanity and the world?
3. This is one argument. Do you agree or disagree with Diamond's thesis? Explain why you think so.

3. Study your geography. Geography quiz: Friday, Sept 16

On the right side bar, play the geography games and see what level you can reach. I can get to 12. See if you can beat me and prepare for your geography quiz.

18th Century Trans-Atlantic Revolutions HW

HW is due on Friday. You must read all of the documents and answer the question. See directions below.

1. What values and assumptions did the revolutionary movements that swept across the Western world from the 17th to early 18th centuries have in common? The documents: English Bill of Rights, The Third Estate of Dourdon, Common Sense, Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen, Bolivar’s Jamaican Letter.

a. For each document, quote a sentence or two that expresses its central idea in a nutshell.
b. Write 1-2 paragraphs in which you identify an underlying assumption shared by all of these documents. The assumption should have to do with the “big issue,” such as human nature, the characteristics of a just society, the ends of government, the idea of freedom, and the meaning of right.

Final and Categorical Split Format

Hi Everyone,

The test will be a two part final. The essay will be on Thursday and the 50 multiple choice questions will be on Friday. The M/C will cover Foundations (Neolithic and Classical), Post-Classical and the Early Modern period.

I didn't tell 6th period the topic but I did tell them the time period - so for you 5th period kids who don't know...It will be a compartive essay (sims and diffs) for two regions during the Classical Period.

Remember the rubric for the Compartative Essay. Make sure you know all of the points. Again here is the formula per paragraph (Categorical Split).

You need a thesis that explains the three topics and the sims and diff. Region 1 and Region two share sims and diffs is NOT acceptable. Region 1 and Region 2 are similar in Topic 1 but are different in Topic 2 and 3 IS acceptable. These are just examples. Obviously there are other combinations.

Categorical Split Format:

Thesis that has an argument and sets out topics

Body Paragraph 1 = Topic 1 - Sims and Diffs, Evidence for both, Reasons for sim or diff

Body Paragraph 2 = Topic 2 - Sims and Diffs, Evidence for both, Reasons for sim or diff

Body Paragraph 3 = Topic 3 - Sims and Diffs, Evidence for both, Reasons for sim or diff

Conclusion

Happy Holidays

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to remind you that you have two assignments to hand in on the day we come back.

1. Change Over Time Chart for the Early Modern Period (look in your email for the attachment. Just print out the page you need).

2. Compare and Contrast Essay: Compare Spanish Empire Building in the period of 1450-1800 with ONE of the following - Russian or Ottoman Empire Building. (Make sure to use the categorical split format - you figure out 3 categories to discuss, but make sure to pick ones that relate specifically to empire building).

Happy Holidays and enjoy the break. See you in 2011.
